Apple May Reveal Google Gemini Partnership This Fall

If you're hoping for more AI model integrations with Apple devices beyond just ChatGPT, your wait may soon be over. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple plans to announce at least one additional partnership this fall, potentially with Google Gemini. Gemini has been rumored to be part of the iOS 18 chatbot landscape alongside OpenAI's offerings. Apple software chief Craig Federighi hinted at a Google collaboration shortly after the recent keynote presentation. There are also rumors surrounding Anthropic, suggesting that Apple might forge a deal with them in the future. However, Meta’s Llama chatbot was deemed insufficient for integration.

In addition to chatbot partnerships, Apple is set to introduce Apple Intelligence, initially in beta, later this fall. The company aims to transform AI into a profit-generating avenue, rather than just enhancing hardware sales. Gurman indicates that Apple might eventually offer subscription-only features for Apple Intelligence, but this is likely a distant prospect. Currently, this feature is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, raising questions about whether it will spur a significant upgrade cycle, especially since the effectiveness of the features remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, Apple is expected to benefit financially from in-app purchases associated with its AI partners' chatbot subscriptions. This strategy allows Apple to leverage third-party AI services as it gradually develops its own generative AI system. Ultimately, this expansion will provide users with more options, even if these choices primarily involve different takes on algorithmically generated content.
