New Features in iOS 18: AI-Powered Summary Notifications and Enhanced Calendar Management

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple plans to introduce several new artificial intelligence features in iOS 18, including automatic notification summaries.

In his latest "Power On" newsletter, Gurman mentioned that Apple will make a significant entry into generative AI at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). This update aims to enhance Siri's voice capabilities, facilitating more natural conversations and introducing a range of practical features collectively referred to as "Proactive Intelligence."

Among these new features are automatic summaries of iPhone notifications, quick overviews of news articles, transcriptions of voice memos, and improved automatic calendar filling and app recommendations. Additionally, photo editing will receive AI-driven enhancements, though users already familiar with Adobe's AI tools may find it less groundbreaking.

Gurman noted that Apple will primarily rely on on-device processing to support its AI functionalities, with cloud support provided by its high-end Apple silicon chips. He also indicated that Apple does not plan to launch a chatbot like ChatGPT and acknowledges that the company is "playing catch-up" in this area.

The company is expected to preview its next-generation software updates during the WWDC, commencing June 10, marking its first significant venture into the AI realm.
