Is ChatGPT Widely Used? The Actual Usage Rates of AI Chatbots Fall Short of Popular Perception

June 12 Update: Survey Indicates Low Adoption of AI Chatbots

A recent Morgan Stanley survey highlights that AI chatbot usage is significantly lower than expected. In April, 2,000 participants were polled about their experiences with AI technology. The results revealed that only 19% had used ChatGPT, and just 9% had engaged with Google's Bard chatbot. Disturbingly, most respondents who had never tried a chatbot indicated they are unlikely to do so in the next six months.

Analysts from Morgan Stanley underscore the need for investors to recognize that AI integration is still in its infancy. Currently, users mainly engage with chatbots for exploring new topics, while practical applications that could offer commercial value remain distant. For example, in areas like online shopping and product selection, chatbot usage is notably low, which could restrict advertising revenue opportunities for businesses.

On a positive note, AI's influence on e-commerce and the travel sector may enhance revenue. Companies can leverage AI to deliver more accurate and personalized search and recommendation services. When it comes to online shopping, 56% of respondents would initially use Google, YouTube, or Bard. Meanwhile, preferences for travel inquiries showed diversity: 37% would turn to Google, while 33% favored dedicated travel sites such as Expedia or Booking.com.

Morgan Stanley suggests that Google can retain its competitive edge by “offering more comprehensive and personalized travel search services,” as reflected in the AI-driven search results and features provided by Bard.
