Andrej Karpathy, a prominent researcher and former head of AI at Tesla, has announced on X that he has left OpenAI once again.

In his post, Karpathy expressed his “immediate plan is to work on my personal projects and see what happens,” hinting at exciting endeavors ahead for those who follow him.

This marks Karpathy’s second tenure with OpenAI. He initially joined the organization in 2016 and 2017 under co-founders Elon Musk and Sam Altman. Afterward, he transitioned to Tesla, where he served as Director of AI from 2017 to 2022, playing a key role in the company’s self-driving initiatives.

Karpathy departed Tesla in 2022 before rejoining OpenAI in February 2023. His recent exit was first reported by The Information.
