Google is integrating the Gemini chatbot into Google Workspace, enhancing its business productivity suite with enterprise-grade AI capabilities. This strategic move makes the advanced AI assistant more accessible to users within the platform.
Aparna Pappu, vice president and general manager of Google Workspace, stated, “With built-in enterprise-grade data protections, employees can save time and deliver higher-quality work securely and compliantly with an AI-powered assistant.” This announcement came ahead of the Gemini at Work event.
Workspace users on Business, Enterprise, and Frontline plans will gain automatic access to the Gemini app. Google Workspace provides enterprises with a robust suite of tools, including Gmail, Docs, and Calendar, while allowing them to utilize their own domains and maintain enterprise-level security.
The Gemini app enables users to ask the chatbot questions about company policies and receive personalized action suggestions. This integration mirrors Microsoft’s Copilot, allowing productivity suite users to interact directly with an AI assistant.
Pappu emphasized that Workspace users “will have choice and control” over how the Gemini app handles information, assuring them that any data, prompts, or generated responses won't be used to train Gemini models.
This isn’t Google's first foray into integrating AI features within Workspace. For an additional fee, users can directly incorporate Gemini into Gmail, Docs, and Drive to enhance email suggestions and take notes during Google Meet sessions. Google also previewed Google Vids, an AI video generation tool for enterprise users.
In tandem with the Gemini integration, Google announced a new security toolkit for Workspace customers. Pappu described the security advisor as a “personal security expert” offering tailored insights, actionable guidance, and additional threat prevention measures. This feature will deliver security insights directly to IT administrators and will be available to Workspace Business users soon.
Furthermore, Google has achieved new industry certifications for Gemini in Workspace, including SOC 1/2/3 and ISO 27001 compliance, building on its earlier HIPAA compliance for Gemini.
According to a recent Google survey, 75% of daily users of the Gemini model indicated it improved their work quality and saved them an average of 105 minutes per week. During the Gemini at Work event, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian reported significant adoption, with over two million developers leveraging its AI platforms and a 36-fold increase in API usage of Gemini models.
Kurian expressed enthusiasm for the innovation and rapid development his customers are demonstrating with generative AI, stating, “We continue to partner with customers to help deliver real business value through increased leads, conversions, sales, and profits.”
