Even as tech visionaries like Bill Gates, Reid Hoffman, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg, Jodi Baxter, and Debashree D. highlight the transformative potential of generative AI, many everyday users remain skeptical.
Recent critiques have fueled this skepticism, particularly after WIRED Magazine, where my wife serves as Editor-in-Chief, called out Perplexity for allegedly scraping its content despite a robot.txt opt-out directive.
In addition, OpenAI has drawn criticism from both observers and employees for its disruptive ambitions and a perceived focus on “shiny products” at the expense of AI safety. This concern likely influenced the departure of co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who established Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) to ensure the safety of emerging superintelligent AI models—those capable of surpassing human performance in economically significant tasks.
Despite the criticisms, AI companies are continuously delivering innovative advancements. Just this week, Runway showcased its new generative AI video model, Gen-3 Alpha, which could outperform OpenAI’s Sora and Luma AI Dream Machine in generating realistic, Hollywood-quality videos in mere seconds.
Moreover, Anthropic has recently claimed the title of the most powerful AI model with its Claude 3.5 Sonnet, which some users have described as showing “sparks of AGI.”
As I’ve noted before, AI appears to be experiencing a “trough of disillusionment” on the Gartner Hype Cycle. While many AI demonstrations are impressive, skeptics point out the ethical concerns around data scraping without permission and celebrate the technology's public setbacks, while critiquing executives for their overly optimistic narratives about a still-maturing technology.
Does this mean generative AI is as discredited as NFTs or the Metaverse, which have struggled for mainstream acceptance? Not at all. Companies ranging from startups like Color to Fortune 500 giants like Walmart are integrating AI into their operations and reaping tangible benefits across various sectors.
Discover how these companies leverage generative AI, the tools and workflows they adopt, and the impact on their customers at our largest annual conference, VB Transform 2024, from July 9-11 at the Terra Gallery & Event Venue in San Francisco.
Attendees will include leaders from the most influential generative AI companies, such as:
- Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity
- Jonathan Ross, CEO and Founder of Groq
- Olivier Godement, Head of Product at OpenAI
- Jieliang Hao, Head of Business at Pika
- Desirée Gosby, VP of Emerging Technology at Walmart
- Kari Ann Briski, Vice President of AI Models, Software, and Services at NVIDIA
- Zac Maufe, Global Head of Regulated Industries at Google Cloud
- Colette Stallbaumer, WorkLab Cofounder and Copilot GM at Microsoft
And many more (70+ speakers).
I will be moderating panels and breakout sessions, eager to connect with these industry leaders and the estimated 400+ enterprise decision-makers and entrepreneurs attending.
