Meta
The excitement surrounding AI is peaking, with a mixed bag of outcomes across various platforms. For many early adopters, diving into AI has been a costly venture. Today, however, Meta AI has officially launched, powered by the Llama 3 model. Currently free, it has the potential to become one of the first mainstream AI tools available. This is largely due to Meta AI’s integration into some of the most popular platforms globally, which collectively serve billions of users. Now accessible in English, this multifunctional AI tool can be found on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.
In its initial rollout outside the U.S., Meta AI is expanding to users in countries such as Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Meta has introduced its AI as a standalone chatbot across all the mentioned apps. In WhatsApp, you can easily summon it in group chats by using the @MetaAI keyword. It’s also available in the DMs section on Instagram and Messenger.
What can Meta AI do?
Similar to a standard internet-connected chatbot, Meta AI can provide summarized information from the web. However, its seamless integration into social and messaging apps eliminates the need for tedious web searches. Users can engage it directly in personal chats, turning it into a practical answering machine. It appears that Meta AI pulls results from search engines like Google and Microsoft Bing, offering direct answers and one-tap search suggestions in the chat window.
For instance, in a group chat where friends are discussing travel plans, the AI can quickly find flights and hotel options. Just like any text-to-image AI, it can also generate images; notably, the images update in real time as you tweak your prompts. Simply type “/imagine” in a chat with Meta AI to see it in action. To add some flair, there’s an “animate” command that transforms images into short animations, akin to shareable GIFs, providing an entertaining element to conversations.
In another innovative move, Facebook is introducing a one-tap “Meta AI” button beneath public posts. This feature comes with contextual options that activate the chatbot instantly. For example, a post about a mushroom recipe might include buttons that provide “safety tips,” launching the Meta AI window that delivers concise advice on identifying and safely storing mushrooms.
The most appealing aspect of Meta AI’s rollout is that there are no hardware limitations or processing prerequisites. All functionalities are managed through cloud servers, making the features universally accessible across apps. The only drawback is the current language barrier; however, given Meta’s ongoing work with large language models, a solution to this issue seems imminent.
And yes, it’s all completely free. However, concerns linger regarding what Meta stands to gain from this extensive initiative. Operating generative AI models is among the most expensive endeavors today. While Meta has the financial resources, the company’s history of user data management raises questions about whether these interactions will feed into developing more powerful AI models. The answers are unclear, and predictions are challenging. Nevertheless, it’s important to acknowledge Meta for making generative AI genuinely accessible to a broad audience. This comprehensive approach to a multimodal AI tool eliminates subscription fees and multi-tasking complexities, further enhancing user convenience.
