After spending much of its early years exclusively on Discord, Midjourney, the popular AI image generation service, is now expanding access to its website for all users. This includes limited free trials for those not already signed up.
New users can create approximately 25 images for free, as shared by Midjourney co-founder and CEO David Holz in a Discord announcement. This initiative allows both new and existing users to explore the platform's capabilities without financial commitment.
However, Midjourney faces increasing competition from other emerging AI services, such as Elon Musk's xAI and its Grok 2 chatbot, as well as the newly launched Ideogram 2 image generator. Additionally, the company is dealing with a lawsuit from artists who claim copyright infringement due to training on protected works without consent or compensation.
How to Get Started with Midjourney on the Web
Signing up for Midjourney is simple, with options to register using either a Google or Discord account. This dual sign-up method streamlines the onboarding process, making the platform more accessible.
Once logged in, users can generate images by entering text prompts in the input box labeled “What will you imagine?” They can create images in sets of four and customize various settings by clicking on the controls to adjust the image's aspect ratio and the degree of stylization, randomness, and variability among the generated images.
On the left side of the website, a navigation column allows users to access different sections, including an “Organize” tab for viewing previously generated images and a “Chat” tab for discussing creations with other users.
For Existing Users: Logging In and Merging Accounts
Existing users should sign in using their Discord accounts to retain their image history from the platform. Midjourney also allows users to merge their Discord and Google accounts under the “Account” tab, providing future flexibility in logins.
Midjourney's decision to broaden web access and offer free trials is poised to attract a diverse user base, from casual creators to dedicated artists, ultimately enhancing engagement within the platform.
