New York state has made a new law that says government agencies must check and tell everyone how they use artificial intelligence software. Governor Kathy Hochul signed this law after it was passed by the state lawmakers earlier this year. The law says that any software using algorithms, computer models, or AI must be looked at carefully. Then, the agencies have to give the results to the governor and top lawmakers, and also put them on the internet.
The law also says that AI cannot be used in some situations. For example, if a computer has to decide if someone gets unemployment benefits or help with childcare, a person must always watch over the computer to make sure it's doing the right thing. The law also makes sure that government workers won't have their hours or jobs cut because of AI.
The person who started the bill, State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, thinks this law is important. It helps make sure that new technology is used safely in the government.
