NIST's New Report Raises Alarm About Escalating AI Attack Threats

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has urgently released a report addressing the growing threats to artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

Titled “Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations,” the report comes at a crucial time when AI systems are increasingly powerful yet more susceptible to attacks.

Adversarial machine learning (ML) techniques allow attackers to subtly manipulate AI systems, potentially leading to catastrophic failures. The report outlines the methods of these attacks, categorizing them by attackers’ goals, capabilities, and knowledge of the target AI system.

According to the NIST report, “Attackers can deliberately confuse or even ‘poison’ artificial intelligence systems to make them malfunction,” exploiting vulnerabilities in the development and deployment of AI.

The report discusses various attack types, including “data poisoning,” where adversaries alter the data used to train AI models. “Recent work shows that poisoning could be orchestrated at scale, enabling even low-budget adversaries to influence public datasets used for model training,” it notes.

Another serious concern highlighted is “backdoor attacks,” which involve embedding triggers in training data to induce specific misclassifications later. The report cautions that “backdoor attacks are notoriously challenging to defend against.”

Additionally, the report addresses privacy risks associated with AI systems. Techniques such as “membership inference attacks” can reveal whether a specific data sample was utilized in training. NIST warns, “No foolproof way exists yet for preventing misdirection in AI systems.”

While AI holds the potential to revolutionize industries, security experts stress the importance of caution. The report states, “AI chatbots, propelled by recent advancements in deep learning, present powerful capabilities for various business applications. However, this emerging technology must be deployed with great caution.”
