Qualcomm has risen to become the No. 2 leader in U.S. patent grants in 2023, surpassing IBM for the first time in nearly 30 years, according to a recent report by IFI.
Samsung maintains its position as the top patent holder in the U.S., having surpassed IBM in 2022. Qualcomm has made significant progress, climbing five spots to secure second place, marking a notable shift in the patent landscape where IBM had dominated for decades.
Taiwan-based TSMC ranks third, while IBM has dropped to No. 4, with its patent counts falling from 4,398 in 2022 to 3,658 in 2023.
Among the top ten countries securing patent grants, only the U.S., Taiwan, and Canada experienced increases in 2023 compared to the previous year, as China fell from third to fourth place.
