A Direct Comparison: Claude 3.5 Sonnet vs. GPT-4o – Performance, Features, and Insights

In the rapidly evolving landscape of large language models (LLMs), two leading contenders have emerged: Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI's GPT-4o (the "o" stands for "Omni"). Both of these AI systems showcase remarkable capabilities, but which one truly stands out? This guide explores Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4o, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses across various tasks.

Pricing and Subscription Tiers

Users can access the GPT-4o model for free through ChatGPT, but there are limitations on the number of queries allowed within a three-hour window. Exceeding this limit will result in automatic access to GPT-3.5, OpenAI's previous model, until the cooldown period expires.

For unlimited access to GPT-4o, users can subscribe to the $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus plan or the $30-per-month Teams subscription, or negotiate an Enterprise plan based on market rates. Paid subscriptions dramatically increase the usage caps and unlock additional features, such as DALL-E image generation.

Claude follows a similar access model. In the free tier, users can chat with Claude via the web or the iOS app, upload images and documents for analysis, and utilize the limited features of Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Upgrading to a $20 monthly Pro account enhances the experience with higher usage limits, access to Claude 3 Opus and Haiku, priority access, and the ability to create AI-assisted projects centered around specific documents. The $30 per month (minimum of five users) Teams plan offers even greater usage limits and collaboration features.

Advantages of Using Claude

Despite a lower market profile than GPT-4o, Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet provides several key advantages. Notably, it has a more extensive context window, accommodating up to 200,000 characters compared to GPT-4o's 128,000. This expanded capacity allows for more comprehensive and relevant responses, particularly in extended conversations. Claude emphasizes accuracy over creativity, making it particularly suitable for summarizing research papers and generating data-driven reports, even if it sometimes struggles with creative tasks like haikus. Furthermore, Claude has a more recent knowledge cutoff (April 2024) compared to GPT-4o (October 2023).

Anthropic has also developed Claude models as Constitutional AIs, which incorporate ethical principles that guide the system in generating accountable outputs and avoiding harmful or illegal content.

Advantages of Using GPT-4o

In contrast, GPT-4o excels in offering a broader range of functions, a more extensive knowledge base, and flexible login options. Unlike Claude, GPT-4o can generate images (subscription required) and access real-time information online, ensuring users receive the most current updates. Moreover, GPT-4o's registration process does not require phone number verification, making it more accessible. Due to its extensive knowledge base, GPT-4o is better equipped for creative tasks across text, audio, and imagery, while also managing user requests with more stability than Claude.

Speed and Accuracy Comparison

Both Claude and GPT-4o can produce diverse outputs, including refining text and creating computer code. When tasked with generating Python code to calculate the area of a circle and graph the function, both models produced similarly structured snippets.

In image identification, Claude and GPT-4o demonstrated equal competency, effectively finding and describing various elements within images.

However, GPT-4o has a distinct edge in providing recent information due to its ability to search the web, whereas Claude's responses are limited by its knowledge cutoff. For instance, asking Claude about recent events in Luxembourg results in an apology for lacking real-time data, along with suggestions to find the requested information elsewhere.

Comparing the two models is somewhat challenging, given that my usage of Claude was limited by a brief lockout after only a few requests. In contrast, ChatGPT's free tier allows continued access, albeit with a switch to an older model temporarily.

Which Is Better?

Ultimately, the ideal choice hinges on your unique needs. If you prioritize factual accuracy, long document processing, and affordability, Claude may be your best option. Conversely, if you seek a diverse array of creative functionalities and are open to additional costs, GPT-4o remains the superior choice.
