Amazon CodeWhisperer Launches New Enterprise Tier for Enhanced Business Solutions

Following the launch of its Bedrock service for developing generative AI applications, Amazon has introduced a new enterprise plan for CodeWhisperer, its AI-driven tool designed to generate and suggest code. This new offering, named the CodeWhisperer Enterprise Tier, enhances functionality by enabling companies to integrate their internal codebases and resources, allowing CodeWhisperer to provide tailored recommendations to developer teams.

According to Amazon's press release, administrators using the CodeWhisperer Enterprise Tier can connect the service to a private code repository. CodeWhisperer will then learn from the repository and adapt its suggestions accordingly. Customization options can be managed through a user-friendly console, where admins can also monitor evaluation metrics, gauge the efficacy of each customization, and selectively deploy these features to developers, ensuring that proprietary code remains secure. Initial customization features will be available in a preview format as part of the CodeWhisperer Enterprise Tier.

The CodeWhisperer Enterprise Tier represents the latest update to CodeWhisperer, which initially launched in late June as part of the AWS IDE Toolkit and the AWS Toolkit IDE extensions, emerging as a competitor to GitHub Copilot. In April, Amazon offered CodeWhisperer for free to developers without usage restrictions, coinciding with the launch of the CodeWhisperer Professional Tier. This tier introduced new capabilities, including single sign-on with AWS Identity and Access Management and increased limits for security vulnerability scanning.

Despite the advancements, code-generating services have faced scrutiny surrounding their compliance with copyright laws. The underlying models for services like CodeWhisperer are often trained on code that may be copyrighted or subject to restrictive licenses. While vendors assert that the doctrine of fair use protects them, opinions on this matter vary widely.

To address these concerns, Amazon has implemented a feature in CodeWhisperer that identifies and optionally filters the licenses associated with suggested functions that may resemble snippets found in its training data. Furthermore, the company assures users that it does not and will not utilize customer-specific customizations for future training of the CodeWhisperer model, nor will it store or log customer content while processing requests from a developer’s integrated development environment (IDE).
