Apple Limits Employee Use of External AI Tools Like ChatGPT as It Develops Its Own Technology

According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple has limited employee access to external AI tools, such as ChatGPT, due to concerns about sensitive data leaks. The tech giant has also cautioned against using GitHub Copilot, a Microsoft tool that automates code writing, as it develops its own AI solutions in-house.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, recently introduced an "incognito mode" for its chatbot that doesn't retain user conversation history or use this data for AI training. This update has sparked considerable concern about data management practices among AI chatbots, especially regarding the extensive user data processed for enhancing capabilities.

On Thursday, OpenAI launched the ChatGPT app for iOS in the U.S., stating that it aims to translate advanced research into practical, user-friendly tools. As tech companies shift towards mobile-based generative AI solutions to minimize reliance on expensive cloud servers, Google announced the successful deployment of its PaLM 2 AI on Samsung Galaxy phones last week. This transition could significantly cut costs for chatbot services and open doors for innovative applications of generative AI.

Founded in 2015 by influential figures, including Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, OpenAI began as a nonprofit focused on safe and powerful AI development. It later became a for-profit organization, with Microsoft announcing a multi-billion dollar investment in January, reportedly valuing OpenAI at around $29 billion.
