Apple has officially unveiled its highly anticipated AI features, introducing tools powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT. This integration promises users personalized, secure technology that melds seamlessly with Apple software. At the annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Senior Vice President Craig Federighi introduced the AI platform "Apple Intelligence," which offers capabilities such as summarizing text, creating original images, and extracting relevant data.
In addition to its AI offerings, Apple announced updates to its iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems. Federighi emphasized, "We have been working on this for a long time." The new AI system emphasizes a personalized user experience while safeguarding user data. Through a partnership with OpenAI, Apple users will gain access to ChatGPT via Siri at no extra cost, with a beta version available later this year and some features launching in 2025.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration. A focal point of the presentation was the commitment to customer data security, highlighted by a system called "Private Cloud Computing," which aims to protect user information during data transmission to data centers.
While Apple showcased numerous operating system updates, the emphasis on AI captured the attention of both investors and users. As competitors like Google and Microsoft advance in the AI realm, Apple aims to close the gap. The event, lasting just under two hours, featured a demonstration of the new iOS 18 system, enabling users to customize and securely lock individual applications.
New features for email and messaging include satellite connectivity for sending messages and email categorization options. Following the event, market reaction was muted, with shares dipping nearly 2%.
Apple also introduced VisionOS 2, the latest software for its Vision Pro headset, allowing users to convert regular photos into 3D images, and announced plans for a global Vision Pro launch.
CEO Tim Cook is under pressure to reestablish Apple’s position as a leader in AI. The newly updated AirPods software enhances call clarity by eliminating background noise, while a revamped "Health" feature on the Apple Watch utilizes machine learning to display user photos more effectively.
In response to customer demand, Apple finally launched a Calculator app for the iPad, earning applause from the audience. Once a pioneer in the AI space with Siri's launch in 2011, Apple has since faced stiff competition from Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa. The introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022 marked a significant evolution in AI technology, further intensified by competitors like Samsung Electronics integrating Google AI into their devices earlier this year.
