The rise of AI technology, especially generative UIs like ChatGPT, has markedly improved productivity across various sectors. At the recent BEYOND International Science and Technology Innovation Expo in Macau, Zhang Junbo, President of Unity China, noted that numerous gaming companies are integrating AI into their development workflows. A significant portion of artwork, including character models and concept art, is now generated with AI assistance, leading to the creation of higher-quality content at reduced costs and expedited production timelines.
Zhang raised concerns about potential job displacement driven by AI, highlighting that many routine tasks may soon be performed by virtual beings. These entities are often more manageable and cost-effective, with estimates suggesting that up to 80% of concept artists could face job losses. Conversely, he pointed out that advancements in virtual character technology have reached a level of maturity, with realistic rendering of skin, hair, clothing, movements, and expressions. He proposed that some human roles might evolve to focus on developing and utilizing virtual characters through these advanced technologies, allowing AI to play a supportive role in the workforce.
