Apple's Game-Changer: How They Plan to Outshine ChatGPT

OpenAI should be cautious as Apple appears to be diving into the artificial intelligence arena, and the implications for ChatGPT could be significant. Apple is reportedly developing a large language model (LLM) named ReALM, which stands for Reference Resolution As Language Modeling. Designed to enhance Siri's performance and contextual understanding, the ReALM model comes in four variants, with even its smallest version performing comparably to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

This intriguing information was revealed in an Apple research paper, initially shared by Windows Central, offering an early glimpse into Apple's AI advancements. ReALM aims to elevate Siri's capabilities by enabling the assistant to grasp context more effectively in conversations.

Additionally, the model is purported to process onscreen content and other information, providing it with a competitive advantage over ChatGPT. While ChatGPT can handle images and PDFs, it lacks the ability to read the entire screen and interpret its contents.

Apple's LLMs are set to launch in four sizes: ReALM-80M, ReALM-250M, ReALM-1B, and ReALM-3B. The suffixes indicate millions and billions of parameters. Researchers benchmarked ReALM against OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, revealing concerning news for OpenAI, as even the ReALM-80M model reportedly matches up to GPT-4, while larger models perform significantly better.

The research paper highlights that ReALM demonstrates substantial improvements over similar systems, with the smallest model outperforming others by as much as 5% in processing onscreen information.

While companies like Microsoft quickly embraced the AI trend—having recently made a substantial $100 billion investment in ChatGPT—Apple has maintained a more reserved approach. However, earlier rumors indicated Apple's intentions to enhance Siri with advanced AI capabilities, and this research paper likely supports those plans.

It remains uncertain when Apple's LLM will be available to the public, but there's a strong possibility that ReALM will be discussed during the upcoming WWDC in June.
