Bumble Empowers Users to Report Profiles Featuring AI-Generated Photos

Bumble is urging its users to help maintain the integrity of its platform by combating AI-generated profiles. On Tuesday, the company rolled out a new reporting feature that allows members to flag profiles suspected of using AI-generated photos and videos.

When users wish to report a profile, they can select “Fake profile” and then choose “Using AI-generated photos or videos.” Other reporting categories include inappropriate content, underage users, scams, and instances of individuals using someone else’s images.

This new reporting feature comes at a time when AI-generated photos are unfortunately prevalent on dating apps, often serving to mislead or deceive other users. With just a click, someone can create a façade of wealth and fitness by posing as a yacht-owning fitness model. Bumble aims to use this reporting tool to discourage dishonesty and promote genuine interactions among users.

“Creating a space for meaningful connections requires eliminating any misleading or harmful elements,” stated Risa Stein, Bumble's vice president of product, in a release. “We are dedicated to enhancing our technology to ensure Bumble remains a safe and trustworthy dating platform. By implementing this new reporting option, we can gain deeper insights into how bad actors exploit AI, so our community can feel secure while making connections.”

This reporting feature builds on Bumble’s recent introduction of an AI tool, “Deception Detector,” which blends AI with human oversight to identify and remove fake profiles, spammers, and scammers. Since launching this feature in February, Bumble has reported a 45% reduction in member reports of spam, scams, and fake accounts. Additionally, Bumble offers an AI-powered “Private Detector,” designed to automatically blur explicit images.

While Bumble is actively addressing the challenge of AI-generated profiles, the company’s founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd, has innovative ideas for AI's potential role in dating. In a recent interview, Herd suggested that the future of online dating might involve AI “dating concierges” or assistants that could go on numerous dates on behalf of users to find their ideal match. It remains to be seen how many people would embrace this concept, but everyone has their preferences.
