While not everyone may wish to create an AI version of themselves, this feature is perfect for those looking to have fun and visualize alternative life scenarios.

Founded by former Snap engineer Vu Tran, Butterflies AI was conceived from his observation of the limited consumer-focused AI products beyond generative chatbots. With the Clones launch, Tran envisions users stepping into various narratives, sparking imagination with the question: "What if?" Whether you wish to see yourself as an astronaut, celebrity, or pro wrestler, Butterflies AI transcends simple photo manipulation, allowing users to create AI clones with unique personalities that others can interact with.

“One exciting aspect of creating clones is the ability to embody a version of yourself that remains authentic while providing a buffer for sharing on the internet,” Tran shared. “It offers a safer way to express your identity online.”

Real-World Applications of AI Clones

For instance, a Butterflies AI team member recently traveled to France but dislikes taking selfies. Instead, he crafted a Butterfly version of himself and prompted his clone to replicate his experiences. While he missed capturing a photo in the lavender fields of Provence, he now has an AI image to commemorate the moment.

The Clones feature launches shortly after Meta introduced a similar concept, allowing select creators to clone themselves for AI chatbot interactions. However, unlike Meta's restricted rollout, Butterflies AI is making its Clones feature available to all users.

Getting Started with Clones

To create a clone, simply navigate to your account profile and click the new "Butterflies Clones" button. Capture a selfie, and you’ll be on your way to embodying your AI persona.

While some may find the merging of AI and social media concerning, Butterflies AI is primarily focused on entertainment and creativity, not as a substitute for platforms like Instagram.

In November 2023, Butterflies AI successfully completed a $4.8 million seed round led by Coatue, with participation from SV Angel and strategic angels, many of whom are seasoned professionals from Snap's product and engineering teams.
