ChatGPT Can Now Browse the Internet Again: What This Means for Users

When ChatGPT launched last November and generated immense buzz online, it was ironically unaware of its own impact. Its knowledge base had been cut off in September 2021, the latest data it was trained on at that time. However, OpenAI recently announced a significant upgrade: ChatGPT can now access real-time information from the internet.

This new feature, termed "Browse with Bing," allows ChatGPT to provide up-to-date, authoritative answers complete with direct source links. Users can seamlessly engage with the tool within the Bing Chat interface, where it will notify them when it's retrieving information and will include citation links in its responses. "Browsing is particularly beneficial for tasks requiring current information, like technical research, choosing a bike, or planning a vacation," OpenAI noted.

Currently, browsing functionality is available to Plus and Enterprise users, with plans to roll it out to all users soon. To enable this feature, simply select "Browse with Bing" under the GPT-4 options.

It's worth mentioning that this isn't ChatGPT's first foray into web browsing. A similar capability was offered to Plus subscribers as recently as July but was discontinued due to users exploiting it to bypass paywalls. This recent update also builds on another major enhancement unveiled earlier this week, showcasing the chatbot's new multimodal capabilities.
