On July 9, a recent survey revealed that China leads the world in the adoption rate of generative artificial intelligence (AI), underscoring its significant advancements in this technological field. The global spotlight on generative AI intensified after OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late 2022.
Conducted by SAS, a US-based AI and data analytics software company, in collaboration with Coleman Parkes Research, the survey included responses from 1,600 industry decision-makers across 16 countries and regions. The results showed that 83% of Chinese respondents reported using generative AI, surpassing the 65% of respondents in the United States and the overall global average of 54%.
The survey covered various industries, including banking, insurance, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, and energy, highlighting China's rapid progress in generative AI. Following the launch of ChatGPT with support from Microsoft in November 2022, the sector has seen substantial momentum, leading to numerous Chinese companies introducing their own generative AI products.
Additionally, a recent report from the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization indicates that China is also at the forefront of generative AI patent filings. Between 2014 and 2023, China submitted over 38,000 patent applications in this domain, while the United States filed only 6,276 during the same period. As competition intensifies, the application of generative AI in large enterprises in China is expected to accelerate further.
