OpenAI’s DALL·E 3 image generator, initially available only to Plus, Teams, and Enterprise subscribers since its launch last September, is now accessible to all users—with some important restrictions.
ChatGPT Free users can now generate up to two images per day using DALL·E 3. Simply ask ChatGPT to create an image for a presentation, customize a card for a friend, or visualize a concept you have in mind.
This limited allocation of two images per day may not seem extensive, especially considering that free users can generate unlimited images with Microsoft Copilot, which utilizes the same GPT-4 model as ChatGPT. While Google’s Gemini allows free-tier users to create images, Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 currently focuses solely on analyzing uploaded images.
Using DALL·E 3 through ChatGPT on the free tier is similar to the experience provided to paid subscribers. Just make sure you're using the GPT-4 model (as long as you haven’t recently reached your daily usage limits in ChatGPT), then enter your image request into the context window and wait for the AI to process your command.
As with text-based prompts, clarity is essential. Provide detailed and concise instructions to ensure the AI captures your desired output accurately on its first attempt. The rollout is currently underway for all users, and I accessed it while drafting this article. For example, when I requested, “draw a picture of a cat — it should be a line drawing with no color or fill,” the AI generated a satisfactory line drawing of a cat in approximately 10 seconds. Modifying the request to include stripes resulted in the image shown at the top of this post and used up my remaining image generation for the day.
