Hiya Launches Free Chrome Extension to Detect Deepfake Voices Ahead of 2024 US Elections
As the 2024 US elections approach, Hiya, a leader in call screening and fraud detection, has introduced a free Chrome extension designed to identify deepfake voices. The Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector analyzes audio and video streams, providing an authenticity score that indicates whether a voice is likely real or fake. According to Hiya, third-party testers have validated the extension with an impressive accuracy of over 99%, even detecting AI-generated voices that it hasn't specifically trained on. The tool is designed to recognize voices created by new synthesis models shortly after their release.
In a pre-launch trial, we tested the extension by evaluating a YouTube video about blues pioneer Howlin' Wolf, which we suspected featured AI narration. The extension assigned it a low authenticity score of 1/100, confirming our suspicions of a deepfake.
Hiya’s President, Kush Parikh, emphasized the responsibility of social media platforms regarding content authenticity. In a press release, he stated, “It’s clear social media sites have a huge responsibility to alert users when the content they consume is at risk of being an AI deepfake. Currently, individuals bear the burden of vigilance against manipulated content. We're pleased to provide a tool like our Deepfake Voice Detector to empower users to verify what they encounter.”
The extension requires only a few seconds of audio to generate a verdict. It operates on a credit system to manage server load, offering users 20 credits daily—potentially insufficient given the rising prevalence of manipulative AI content on social media.
For those concerned about the authenticity of voices in digital media, the Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector offers a valuable solution this election season.
