Google has launched Imagen 3, its latest AI text-to-image generator, for users in the US via Google’s AI Test Kitchen. This upgraded tool promises to create images with “better detail, richer lighting, and fewer distracting artifacts” than its predecessors. Imagen 3 was first introduced during the I/O event in May and has recently become widely available through the Vertex AI platform. Users on Reddit began experimenting with it last week, and Google has released a research paper detailing its capabilities.
Like other AI image generators, Imagen 3 allows users to create intricate images from prompts. Users can also edit generated images by selecting specific areas and describing desired changes.
While there are restrictions in place, such as not generating images of public figures like Taylor Swift or violent content, users can still create images reminiscent of popular characters by describing their attributes. For example, the tool can produce images similar to Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario, and it has even generated logos for companies like Apple and Google.
In contrast, Google's Imagen 3 operates within stricter guidelines compared to Grok, the AI image generator on Elon Musk’s X platform, which has been used to create controversial content involving drugs and public figures.
Despite some limitations, Imagen 3 presents a significant advancement in AI-generated imagery, showcasing Google's commitment to enhancing user experience while maintaining ethical standards.
