OpenAI has released a free ChatGPT app for iOS, marking the first official mobile application for its popular language model. The app enters a competitive market of third-party AI tools that utilize the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 APIs. Currently, it is available exclusively in the US, with plans for expansion to other countries in the near future.
The app offers a familiar experience similar to the ChatGPT website, enhanced by voice input via OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition technology. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can easily switch between the standard and GPT-4 language models. Users can also access conversation history (synced from the desktop when signed in with the same account) and can export data or manage conversations by deleting or renaming them. However, the recently introduced plugins, including live web access, are not yet included.
OpenAI has indicated that Android users can expect their own version soon, assuring them, “You’re next!” Currently, the app is optimized for iPhone, leaving iPad users with limited options—either use the website or run the app in an upscaled format.
