Douyin's Commitment to Combating Online Violence and Privacy Violations
Douyin has announced its dedication to addressing online violence, with a strong focus on preventing privacy violations and abusive speech. Since early 2024, the platform has tackled 162 cases of cyberbullying and blocked over 50 million comments. Nearly 700,000 offenders have received warnings and educational messages as part of Douyin's proactive approach.
Douyin aims to cultivate a respectful community and is committed to eliminating behaviors that promote online violence, explicitly prohibiting hostile comments. The platform has created a feedback mechanism in partnership with law enforcement to facilitate reporting of any abusive online conduct that may violate laws.
To enhance user safety, Douyin has launched the "One-Click Anti-Cyberbullying" feature. This tool, when activated, prevents users from receiving private messages, bullet screen comments, and standard comments from selected groups for seven days. For users facing inappropriate comments and uncertain about their legal options, Douyin provides a legal consultation service accessible through the app under “Profile - More Features - Safety Center - Anti-Cyberbullying - Legal Rights Guidance.”
Common Violations
1. Image Manipulation for Insults: Many users misuse AI to craft insulting content. Recently, one user generated an image combining pictures of three women with derogatory text, leading to a suspension of the account’s commenting and video posting privileges.
2. Disclosure of Private Information: Douyin has encountered cases where users shared others' private information without consent, inciting online harassment. In one instance, a user repeatedly revealed another's phone number while using offensive language, resulting in immediate comment restrictions.
3. Spreading Malicious Comments: Some users inundate the platform with derogatory comments across various videos, often filled with profanity. Douyin observed an account consistently posting derogatory phrases. Although not aimed at a specific individual, this behavior fosters a toxic community, prompting a ban on further comments from the account.
4. Frequent Public Abuse: Defamatory remarks regarding personal disputes have surged on social media. One user, on March 21, targeted their former partner with multiple insulting comments. Douyin responded with a warning that further violations would lead to stricter penalties.
With consistent monitoring and strict policies, Douyin is committed to maintaining a healthy online environment free from violence and disrespect. Users are encouraged to report violations and seek support for any online harassment faced.
