Elon Musk has announced that xAI will open source its Grok chatbot. This decision, effective this week, is part of Musk’s ongoing effort to share technological advancements. Tesla famously open-sourced its patents a decade ago, influencing electric vehicle design across the industry.
Similarly, X released the code behind its "For You" algorithm last year, although it provided limited insights. The Wall Street Journal suggests that by allowing third-party developers and researchers to examine Grok's code, Musk aims to boost its adoption and gather valuable feedback for improvement.
This move may also be interpreted as a challenge to OpenAI. Recently, Musk filed a lawsuit against the ChatGPT developer, a company he co-founded, accusing it of prioritizing profits over its original non-profit vision. The lawsuit describes OpenAI as a “closed-source de facto subsidiary” of Microsoft, which holds a significant stake in the company. In response, OpenAI claimed that Musk sought to merge it with Tesla and take on the CEO role.
