Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, has successfully secured $6 billion in a recent funding round, aiming to strengthen its position in the competitive landscape dominated by rivals such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Alphabet.
Notable investors in xAI's Series B funding include Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, and Kingdom Holding, as shared in a blog post by the startup.
This funding round aligns with prior reports that indicated xAI sought to raise $6 billion at an impressive pre-money valuation of $18 billion. Additionally, it was highlighted that X, the social network Musk owns, retains a stake in xAI, thus benefiting from its eventual success.
Musk is recognized as a pioneer in the AI industry. In his capacity as CEO of Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, he has driven advancements in self-driving technology. He was also a co-founder of OpenAI, investing tens of millions of dollars into the organization. However, Musk's relationship with OpenAI has soured. In March, he filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its co-founder Sam Altman, accusing them of deviating from their mission and transforming into a “closed-source de facto subsidiary” of Microsoft. He has further criticized Google for alleged bias in its AI systems.
After launching xAI last year, Musk introduced the Grok chatbot, a direct competitor to ChatGPT, in November. The company later made Grok available through a chatbot for Premium+ users on X, who subscribe for $16 per month. In April, xAI unveiled the updated Grok 1.5 model, which was also accessible to Premium users on the platform. Furthermore, the company showcased Grok’s multimodal features earlier this year and has made the base model open-source, albeit without the accompanying training code.
xAI plans to utilize the new funds to launch its initial products, enhance its infrastructure, and accelerate future research and development. The company is also exploring potential partnerships to expand Grok's reach beyond the X platform.
With backers that include influential figures like Ken Howery, a PayPal co-founder and Founders Fund partner, xAI is on a mission to create “truthful” AI systems. However, concerns linger as Grok, like other AI chatbots, has faced scrutiny for its tendency to produce misleading information through its news summary features on X.
