Emmett Shear: Former Twitch CEO with a Spicy Social History Takes Charge of Stabilizing OpenAI

Emmett Shear, the interim CEO of OpenAI, may soon find himself without a job given the rapid and tumultuous developments at one of the leading artificial intelligence companies in the world. Currently at the forefront after a whirlwind three days—following Sam Altman's firing on Friday and the brief leadership of CTO Mira Murati—Shear has now stepped into the role. On Monday morning, he shared on X (formerly Twitter), “Today, I received a call inviting me to embrace a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to become the interim CEO of @OpenAI.”

Shear, who co-founded Justin.tv and led Twitch as CEO until March 2023, faces significant challenges ahead. Fundraising efforts are already in progress, with OpenAI reportedly looking to secure substantial investments from players like SoftBank alongside potential additional funding from its major investor, Microsoft, which has already contributed billions—provided that arrangements can be made without invoking antitrust issues. OpenAI is a key player in the ongoing dialogue about AI regulation, with more R&D on the agenda and contracts that need to be secured to ensure long-term commitments from users of GPT.

Shear's immediate task involves developing a foundational three-step plan: identifying the core issues, implementing corrective actions, and leveraging those resolutions for future benefits. He must urgently assess the situation to prevent further unrest within the organization. Over the next 30 days, he aims to engage an independent investigator to review the circumstances surrounding recent events, ensuring transparency and trust within the company as a full report is generated.

Additionally, Shear plans to address the internal and external climate, suggesting notable pushback following recent changes. He intends to connect with employees, partners, investors, and customers to gather feedback and share insights. Retaining customers and partners—critical for revenue generation—is a significant concern for Shear, given the nascent and hype-driven stage of AI applications. As he stated, OpenAI will “reform the management and leadership team to effectively drive results for our customers.”

Shear reiterated that the issues leading to Altman's departure were not related to safety or operational management. “I’m not crazy enough to take this job without board support for commercializing our incredible models,” he remarked.

When offered the position, Shear quickly accepted, taking only “a few hours” to decide. However, it didn’t take long for the public to uncover some of his controversial views on technology and life, raising questions about the board's succession planning.

While he does not support extremist views, his previous remarks on hypothetical global crises sparked concern. His discussions also touch on complex issues like women’s consent. Regardless of perspectives on his stances, and amid the current focus on ethics in AI, these factors make for an intriguing choice for OpenAI’s leadership.

In a less contentious but perplexing assertion, Shear expressed his support for slowing the pace of AI development. This raises questions about how his leadership will align with OpenAI's recent commercial strategy, especially following the announcement of 100 million weekly users of ChatGPT and new opportunities for third-party developers.

Having distanced himself from Amazon, Shear now stands at a crossroads as he works to maintain a strong partnership with Microsoft. In his introductory message, he emphasized, “Our partnership with Microsoft remains strong, and my priority in the coming weeks will be to ensure we continue providing excellent service to all our customers.” As some OpenAI employees threaten to transition to Microsoft—an entity that already owns nearly half of OpenAI—how Shear navigates these dynamics will be crucial as the company considers strategies for independence.
