Amazon has enhanced the AI technology that drives its Just Walk Out system, empowering shoppers to grab items and leave without traditional checkout processes. This upgrade involves the introduction of a new multimodal model to bolster the underlying AI framework of the Just Walk Out checkout system used by retailers. This advanced model increases accuracy by considering additional factors like lighting conditions and shopper behaviors. Unlike the previous sequential analysis, the upgraded Just Walk Out AI now simultaneously processes data from sensors and cameras, blending multiple inputs for heightened precision.
Noteworthy is the self-learning capability of the new AI model, eliminating the need for frequent retraining. This system continues to evolve even if store layouts are altered or merchandise changes. Jon Jenkins, AWS’ vice president for Just Walk Out technology, highlights the benefits of this improvement in a blog post, stressing that the enhanced AI system streamlines deployment, making it faster and more efficient for retailers. Consequently, shoppers can enjoy hassle-free experiences at a growing number of third-party checkout-free stores globally.
Amazon's commitment to enhancing Just Walk Out follows the discontinuation of the technology in its Amazon Fresh stores, in favor of self-service smart shopping carts earlier this year. However, the frictionless checkout system persists in Amazon's Go and Fresh stores in the U.K. Moreover, Just Walk Out has been successfully implemented in over 170 third-party venues, including airports, hospitals, and stadiums like Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks.
Looking ahead, Amazon is set to expand Just Walk Out further, with plans to roll out more Just Walk Out stores in 2024 than in any previous year. The aim is to more than double the number of third-party stores equipped with this technology. The ongoing development of the system promises continuous learning from real-world shopping scenarios, ensuring enhanced accuracy and convenience for retailers and customers worldwide.
Just Walk Out operates by utilizing a combination of RGB cameras and computer vision to track shoppers' selected items as they move through a store. This enables shoppers to exit without the need to pay immediately, with charges automatically processed through their Amazon accounts for the items they've taken. Originally launched in 2018, the earlier model of Just Walk Out required regular manual retraining and occasionally faced delays in identifying purchases, especially in poorly lit areas.
The new multimodal foundation model aims to refine customer experiences by minimizing receipt delays, ultimately simplifying the technology's adoption for retailers. This updated model is adept at handling complex scenarios, such as a shopper picking up and putting down multiple items, or fog obstructing camera views, swiftly and accurately determining the items taken by each shopper.
