Without quality data, AI's potential in enterprises diminishes. Managing and optimizing data workflows can be challenging, but advancements in AI agents are starting to alleviate some of this burden.
San Francisco-based startup Altimate AI recently unveiled its DataMates technology, bringing the benefits of agentic AI to enterprise data operations. DataMates aims to assist data teams in automating and expediting various tasks, such as data documentation and performance optimization, ultimately easing the load on overworked teams and enabling them to meet critical business requirements. Effective data operations are essential for AI development, business intelligence, and data analytics, especially in an era of rapidly increasing data volumes and limited staffing.
Founded in 2022, Altimate AI has garnered backing from John Chambers, former CEO of Cisco and current head of JC2 Ventures. The company's existing DataPilot platform already offers data automation features, and DataMates will enhance this by integrating AI agents to streamline data operations.
"Data teams often face bottlenecks due to overwhelming workloads from ongoing analytics and AI projects," said Pradnesh Patil, CEO and co-founder of Altimate AI, in an exclusive interview. "We started the company to accelerate and automate their work."
Empowering Data Teams with Agentic AI
DataMates function as virtual teammates for enterprise data teams, taking on time-consuming and repetitive tasks. They handle essential operations such as documentation, testing, and data transformations—not just basic automation, but with a contextual understanding that mimics human expertise.
The DataMates system relies on a proprietary framework that combines multiple language models, function calling mechanisms, and a custom knowledge graph. "We have built our own infrastructure for various processes," said Anand Gupta, CTO and co-founder of Altimate AI.
While Altimate AI does utilize commercial language models, Gupta emphasized that their agentic AI framework is primarily homegrown. This advanced architecture enables DataMates to efficiently perform tasks such as:
- Data model drafting
- Automated documentation
- Test generation and execution
- Code review and optimization
- Performance analysis and tuning
Seamless Integration into Existing Workflows
DataMates are designed to integrate effortlessly into existing tools like VS Code, Git, and Slack. "These AI teammates are accessible within the tools data teams already use, working alongside them autonomously to alleviate their workload and expedite project delivery," Gupta explained.
Enhancing Efficiency with Ambient AI
In addition to task automation, Altimate AI incorporates ambient AI, a system that continuously monitors the data infrastructure and provides proactive suggestions. This ambient AI layer allows data teams to focus on strategic tasks while ensuring ongoing optimization in the background.
John Chambers’ Investment in Altimate AI
The innovative approach of Altimate AI has garnered attention from many enterprises, including notable investor John Chambers. "My son, who worked with one of the founders, convinced me that this team is extraordinarily talented," Chambers stated.
Chambers’ son, who previously worked at Walmart Labs, recognized the significant problem Altimate AI addresses—transforming data into usable formats quickly for effective marketing. Chambers believes Altimate AI offers a unique solution in a rapidly growing market segment focused on enhancing the productivity of data engineers and scientists.
"There are few startups targeting this area, and while larger players are exploring it, they have yet to make significant moves," Chambers noted. "Altimate AI has a first-mover advantage, led by professionals who have personally experienced these challenges."
