Google announced its Gemini API developer contest today at the I/O conference, offering cash prizes up to $300,000. The grand prize for the best overall app? A custom electric 1981 DeLorean, designed for excitement.
About the DeLorean
This iconic vehicle, restored by DeLorean Midwest and commissioned by Google, is a unique blend of vintage and modern technology. Originally purchased in 1981 and boasting less than 5,000 original miles, its engine and drivetrain have been replaced with those from a Tesla Model 3.
“This is the world’s fastest DeLorean,” said Michael McElhattan of DeLorean Midwest and host of the YouTube channel DeLorean Nation, highlighting its impressive performance: a 12.26-second quarter mile at 111 MPH and a 0-60 mph in just 4.10 seconds.
The DeLorean has undergone minimal modifications, retaining much of its original interior and only replacing the gauges for electric functionality. With a range of 200-260 miles, it competes with modern electric vehicles.
Custom Build Availability
While DeLorean Midwest is now custom-building these vehicles for customers, prospective buyers should be prepared for a significant investment—about $220,000 for a newly restored all-electric model. McElhattan notes that this price is reasonable, considering low mileage restored DeLoreans typically sell for around $150,000.
