San Francisco-based The Simulation by Fable, renowned for its Emmy-winning team and veterans from Pixar and Oculus, has unveiled a groundbreaking open-source tool designed for creating Westworld-like AI simulations, named SAGA (Skill to Action Generation for Agents). This innovative framework enables developers to construct immersive environments where AI characters take center stage, allowing for unique, player-driven narratives.

“We’re releasing SAGA this week to empower developers in bringing intelligent agents to life within simulations,” Edward Saatchi, CEO of The Simulation by Fable, stated in an interview with GamesBeat. The tool fosters community collaboration, encouraging developers to craft simulations that feature sophisticated AI capable of planning and executing actions in real time.

SAGA enables developers to design intricate worlds rooted in historical events and fictional narratives, from the Cuban Missile Crisis to mythical dragons, according to Saatchi. Currently demonstrated in the Wild West town of Thistle Gulch, SAGA showcases how AI characters interact within a narrative framework. Players can influence agent actions, navigating conflicts between characters like Sheriff Cooper and local gang leader Blackjack Kane, each with their own motivations following a local murder.

“It’s not about agents reacting; they are genuinely making intelligent choices in real time,” Saatchi explained, illustrating the simulation's depth. Through interactions, players can engage in dynamic storytelling, experiencing diverse outcomes based on agent decisions.

The AI characters possess memories and can recall past interactions, enhancing their decision-making capabilities. In a typical scenario, agents pursue self-serving goals while also collaborating. The simulation allows for a variety of outcomes—sometimes the wrong person is arrested, or a shootout may ensue based on agent strategies.

SAGA's design promotes complexity within simulations, providing a platform for developers to create diverse narratives. It enables agents to communicate, form relationships, and shift loyalties, showcasing evolving inter-agent dynamics and adaptive scenarios.

Building on recent academic advancements in embodied agents, such as research by Joon Park and Jim Fan, SAGA employs a unique method of initiating agent actions based on contextual metadata. Developers can scale interactions to involve numerous agents, creating dense, interactive ecosystems.
