Google is introducing a Gemini-powered update to Gmail for Android and iOS that enhances smart replies to emails. This new feature, first announced in May, aims to provide context-aware Smart Replies that deliver more detailed responses by considering the entire email thread.
Users can hover over suggested replies to preview the text and select the one that best suits their needs or writing style. Suggested replies can be instantly sent or edited for personalization. This update is designed to save time, particularly for those who manage a busy Gmail inbox, and to expand the range of automated responses beyond simple phrases like “Yes, I’m working on it” or “No worries, thanks for the heads up!” It even includes options for initial greetings and signoff messages.
If users are satisfied with the automated suggestions, they may not need to type at all when replying to emails. The new contextual Smart Replies are now available for Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, and Google One AI Premium subscribers. Currently, this feature is limited to English and builds upon the original Smart Replies introduced in 2017.
