On June 22, Volkswagen announced that its latest infotainment systems now support ChatGPT. This integration of generative AI is available in European versions of popular models, including the Passat, fully electric ID. series, new Golf, and new Tiguan, through the built-in IDA voice assistant.
This AI enhancement significantly improves user experience, enabling drivers to obtain search results or engage in natural conversations with their vehicles. For example, cars integrated with ChatGPT can provide information on local attractions, summarize past football matches, or help with math problems—allowing drivers to stay focused on the road.
Unlike traditional in-car voice assistants, this system prioritizes intuitive interactions. If a passenger says, "I'm cold," it activates the air conditioning; if they request, "I need bread," it locates a nearby store. The system also offers a variety of features, such as reading detailed recipes or children's stories, enhancing entertainment during the drive.
Volkswagen owners registered for the VW Connect assistant can access this upgraded voice feature without creating a separate account. If the in-car assistant is unable to answer a query, it will seamlessly hand off the request to ChatGPT, which will respond audibly.
Volkswagen has ensured that ChatGPT does not access vehicle data, and all query content is deleted immediately after processing. During the upcoming CES 2024 exhibition, Volkswagen's Head of Technical Development, Kai Grünitz, remarked, "This in-car ChatGPT integration is not just a gimmick. Our research into home smart systems, like Amazon's Alexa and Echo, revealed valuable insights into user behavior. Our goal is to offer a similarly convenient and seamless interaction experience in our vehicles."
