Google Chrome Introduces AI Features: Writing Assistant, Theme Generator, and Tab Organizer Enhancements

Google's Chrome web browser is set to enhance your browsing experience with the introduction of cutting-edge AI technology in its latest update. Announced today, Google is adding three innovative AI-driven features to Chrome for Mac and Windows. These include a smart tab organization system, customizable themes, and an intelligent writing assistant to help you create online content—ranging from forum posts to product reviews.

The writing assistant draws inspiration from Google’s experimental AI search feature, SGE (Search Generative Experience). This tool allows users to draft emails and other content in various tones, whether formal, casual, or with specific lengths in mind.

With this built-in writing helper in Chrome, users can easily create business reviews, draft friendly RSVPs for events, or make formal inquiries about vacation rentals. The tool will also assist in generating posts for public platforms, like online forums.

This experimental feature will be available in next month’s Chrome release. To use it, simply right-click in any text box or field on the web and select “help me write.” After entering a few words, Google’s AI will provide assistance in crafting your message.

In addition to the writing features, AI will also optimize how you organize your tabs and personalize your browsing experience. Chrome's existing Tab Groups feature allows users to manage multiple open tabs by grouping them, but it can often require manual curation. The new Tab Organizer will automate this by suggesting and generating groups based on your current tabs. You can use this feature by right-clicking on a tab and selecting “Organize Similar Tabs.” To make navigation easier, Chrome will also propose names and emojis for the created groups, ideal for tasks such as online shopping, research, or travel planning.

Another exciting addition is a generative AI tool that allows users to create custom themes for their Chrome browser. Leveraging the same text-to-image diffusion model recently launched on Android 14 and Pixel devices, this feature enables you to generate themes based on subjects, moods, visual styles, and colors. Simply select the “Create with AI” option in the “Customize Chrome” panel after clicking “Change theme.” Previously, users faced limited choices among colorful yet simplistic themes, but now they can design something unique that better reflects their personal style.

While the drafting tool will roll out in next month’s update, the tab organizer and theme creator will be available shortly in the U.S. for both Mac and Windows users with the current Chrome version (M121). To access these features, simply sign into Chrome, go to “Settings” in the three-dot menu, and navigate to the “Experimental AI” section. Keep in mind that these features are experimental and won’t yet be available for enterprise and educational accounts.

These enhancements will join the array of existing AI and machine learning tools in Chrome, such as audio and video captioning, Android’s Safe Browsing for site protection, streamlined permission prompts, and summarization of web pages through the "SGE while browsing" feature.

Looking forward, Google plans to integrate even more AI and ML capabilities into Chrome in the coming year, including connections with its new AI model, Gemini, aimed at simplifying your web browsing experience.
