Google Chrome is launching a new AI writing generator today. This Gemini-powered tool extends the existing “Help me write” feature from Gmail to the entire web, leveraging one of Google’s advanced Gemini AI models. Initially announced in January, this feature is still in its “experimental” phase, so you’ll need to enable it manually.
To get started, navigate to the Chrome settings menu and select the “Experimental AI” section. Here, you can activate the new writing feature alongside Google’s automatic tab organizer and the updated Chrome theme manager (which I find somewhat underwhelming). Currently, the AI writing tool is available only in English and supports Windows, Mac, and Linux. Once enabled, right-click on any text field and choose “Help me write.” This function allows you to generate entirely new content, as well as rewrite existing text.
If you're subscribed to Gemini Advanced, please note that this tool does not provide access to an enhanced writing model, according to a Google representative. It is primarily designed for short-form content, such as emails or support inquiries, where a larger model might not significantly improve the output.
A standout feature of this tool is its contextual understanding of the website you’re on. “The tool will recognize the context of the webpage to suggest relevant content,” explains Google engineering director Adriana Porter Felt in today’s announcement. For instance, when composing a review for a pair of running shoes, Chrome will extract key features from the product page to enhance your recommendations for potential buyers.
Similar to the “Help me write” functionality in Gmail, you can easily adjust the length and tone of the generated content.
It’s crucial to understand that the text, content, and URL of the page you’re using will be sent to Google in accordance with its existing privacy policy. Google states that this data is utilized to enhance the feature, including generative model research and machine learning technologies, which involves a review process with human oversight. Proceed with caution.
Google’s Duet AI can now draft your emails for you.
