Google Conducts Test of Gemini-Powered Video Search Feature in India

On Thursday, Google announced that it is testing a new generative AI-powered video search feature in India. This innovative function allows users to record a video using Google Lens and then pose questions about its content to the company's Gemini AI model.

To access this feature, users must enroll in the “AI Overviews and More” experiment through Google Search Labs. However, Google has not disclosed the required video length for this feature. Notably, India has the largest monthly user base for Google Lens.

Participants in this experiment will enjoy these capabilities directly within Google Lens. Currently, the video search features are available for mobile users and exclusively support inquiries in English. Initially unveiled at Google I/O for users in the U.S., the feature is now making its way to India.

With a growing comfort among users for voice and video interactions, Google is promoting multimodal search in India. The company reported that over 40% of Indian users prefer engaging in conversation with Gemini rather than through text.

Additionally, Google has added local language support for seamless interaction with Gemini Live in Hindi, with plans to introduce features for Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, and Urdu in the near future.

Google first launched the ability to combine text and photo searches in 2021, helping users avoid the hassle of visual descriptions. The multimodal search feature was expanded to India in 2022.
