Google Enhances Search with AI Innovations
Google is significantly integrating AI into its search functionalities, unveiling a host of new features on Thursday. The updates include AI-organized web results, enhancements to Google Lens with video and voice capabilities, and the introduction of links and ads within AI Overviews.
Initially, AI-organized search results will focus on recipes and meal inspirations, offering a “full-page experience” that tailors relevant content based on user queries. According to Google, these AI-curated pages will draw “perspectives from across the web,” encompassing articles, videos, and forum discussions.
Additionally, Google’s AI Overviews—informative snippets that appear above search results—are receiving a redesign. The new format features prominently displayed links to supporting webpages, which testing has shown increases traffic to those linked sites. It's important to note that ads will also be integrated into AI Overviews, a predictable step as these features roll out in the U.S.
Circle to Search Enhancements
Google's Circle to Search feature is gaining new Shazam-like abilities, enabling users to instantly identify songs without switching apps. Since its January launch, this feature has expanded to over 150 million Android devices, enhancing its accessibility and functionality.
Advancements in Google Lens
Google Lens, the company’s visual search tool, is also upgrading its capabilities. Users can now engage in video and voice searches, allowing them to ask detailed questions about moving images. For example, while observing fish at an aquarium, users can inquire, “Why are they swimming together?” The AI leverages the video and voice input to identify the species and explain their social behavior.
Moreover, Google Lens now supports voice inquiries while capturing pictures. Users can simply point their camera, press the shutter button, and pose any question about the subject, mimicking a natural conversation.
The visual shopping experience on Google Lens is being enhanced as well, promising to deliver “dramatically more helpful” product information, including reviews, prices from various retailers, and purchasing options.
These advancements in Google Lens are being rolled out now, though some features may require users to opt in. Video search capabilities are available globally for Search Labs users in the “AI Overviews and more” experiment, while voice input is currently accessible to English users on the Google app for Android and iOS. Enhanced shopping options through Lens are expected to launch this week.
