Google Expands AI-Powered Search in India and Japan: What This Means for Users

Google has been integrating its focus on generative AI with its expertise in search through the Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) project since mid-May. Recently, the company announced an expansion of the SGE program to the Japanese and Indian markets.

SGE serves as Google's response to Microsoft's Bing AI, offering users summarized and curated answers to queries instead of traditional lists of web pages. Unlike Microsoft's separate chatbot assistant, Google's AI operates directly within the existing search bar. After launching SGE for U.S. users in late May, Google now extends its innovative search features to users in India and Japan.

In Japan, the AI-enhanced search feature will be available in Japanese, while users in India can access it in both English and Hindi. Additionally, Google has introduced voice input, allowing users to simply speak their queries and listen to the responses. Dedicated ad slots will continue to display search ads throughout the experience.

Google has reported positive user experiences with SGE, particularly for complex queries and new types of questions. Interestingly, SGE garnered the highest satisfaction scores among users aged 18-24, though specific data to support this claim has not been provided.

Despite the initial excitement surrounding generative AI technologies like ChatGPT since its November debut, concerns are growing over potential misuse, including scams. This has drawn the attention of federal regulators and Congress as they aim to address these challenges.
