Google Introduces AI-Driven Planning Tools to Combat Extreme Heat from Climate Change

With extreme weather events increasingly impacting coastal cities and rural communities, Google has introduced new online tools designed for civil servants and community organizers to combat climate change-induced challenges.

Google already provides extreme weather alerts to users in affected areas, offering clear and helpful information on various events, including winter storms, flood advisories, and tornado warnings. Now, the company has added extreme heat alerts to this service. Users can easily find details about heatwaves, including predicted start and end dates, potential medical issues, and mitigation strategies. This initiative is in collaboration with the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN), ensuring the information is accurate and relevant.

To address the challenge of rising urban temperatures, Google has developed Tree Canopy, a feature within its Environmental Insights Explorer app. This tool utilizes AI and aerial imagery to help cities assess their current tree coverage and enhance urban forestry planning. Initially implemented in over a dozen cities, Tree Canopy will soon expand to nearly 350 cities worldwide, including Atlanta, Sydney, Lisbon, and Paris.

Additionally, Google offers AI-driven solutions for planning "cool roofs," which reflect heat instead of absorbing it, providing a viable alternative to traditional tar paper roofs. By integrating innovative technologies, Google is helping communities create more resilient urban environments in the face of climate challenges.
