ChatGPT vs. Google's Bard: A New Era in AI Chatbots
Since its launch two months ago, ChatGPT has captivated users worldwide. However, it's now facing competition as Google unveils its anticipated chatbot: Bard. Announced at Monday's event, Bard is expected to take center stage during Wednesday's "Google Presents" event in Paris.
According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Bard is designed as an "experimental conversational AI service" based on the Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) platform, developed over the past two years. Pichai stated, "Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models." This innovative chatbot utilizes information from the web to deliver fresh, high-quality responses. However, concerns remain about the potential for biased or harmful outputs, a challenge that has plagued earlier chatbots.
Unlike ChatGPT, Bard will not be freely accessible to all internet users initially. Google plans to launch a lightweight version of LaMDA for a select group of trusted users, gradually expanding access. Pichai emphasized the importance of quality and safety, stating, "We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to ensure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality and real-world grounding."
Bard is part of Google’s broader strategy to enhance user interactions. As search queries grow more complex, AI-powered features will aim to simplify information and present diverse viewpoints in easily digestible formats. Pichai hinted that these features are set to roll out to users "soon." Additionally, next month, select developers will gain access to the Generative Language API, which operates on LaMDA.
While specific capabilities of Bard remain unclear, Pichai described it as a "launchpad for curiosity," helping to explain complex topics, like NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, in a straightforward manner.
