Google Leads $450 Million Funding Round for Anthropic, OpenAI’s Major Competitor, to Develop Next-Generation AI Assistants

Anthropic, a leading generative AI startup co-founded by former OpenAI executives, has successfully raised $450 million in a Series C funding round led by Spark Capital. Esteemed tech companies such as Google, Salesforce, and Zoom, alongside venture firms like Sound Ventures and Menlo Ventures, participated in this funding, underscoring strong confidence in Anthropic’s innovative technology for conversational and text-processing applications.

Previously, Google invested $300 million in Anthropic, securing a 10% stake in the company. According to PitchBook, this funding round is the largest for AI this year, following Microsoft's significant $10 billion investment in OpenAI in January, which increased its total stake in that company to $13 billion and valued OpenAI at nearly $30 billion.

Anthropic is focused on developing advanced algorithms for self-learning AI that can enhance virtual assistants in managing emails, conducting research, and creating art and literature—capabilities demonstrated by GPT-4 and other large language models. Anthropic representative Sandy Banerjee highlighted that the new investment will be used to "continue training safer models, including future versions of Claude."
