Lo-Fi Player: An Interactive Music Creation Experience by Google Magenta
Lo-Fi Player, an innovative project from Google Magenta, invites users to explore music creation without needing any prior experience. This engaging, pixelated 2D virtual room runs in your web browser, allowing you to mix lo-fi hip hop tracks simply by interacting with various objects in the space. Utilizing machine learning, Lo-Fi Player adds a unique finesse to the tracks you create.
As you experiment with components like guitars, windows, plants, and desks, you can generate sounds that resonate with you. Once you’ve crafted a soundscape you enjoy, share your Lo-Fi Player room with friends. Interacting with the radio or TV triggers machine-learning models to generate fresh melodies, while the green ceiling lamp allows you to play or pause the music.
Developed by Vibert Thio, a summer intern with Google Magenta, Lo-Fi Player reflects the team's commitment to exploring deep learning algorithms that create music and art. Thio explains, “We chose Lo-Fi Hip Hop due to its popularity and straightforward structure. This simplicity ensures that the music remains coherent, allowing us to create a ‘music-generating room’ rather than just a musical instrument or composition tool.”
Lo-Fi Player originally launched as an engaging interactive YouTube stream, which is still active. This unique feature lets viewers influence the music by entering commands in the chat window. After experimenting with Lo-Fi Player, be sure to check out the YouTube stream for an immersive musical experience.
