Google Takes Legal Action Against Scammers for Launching Malware-Embedded Bard Imitation

The excitement surrounding emerging technologies like generative AI has created an environment where scammers can thrive by exploiting consumer confusion. In response, Google is taking legal action against individuals who allegedly deceived users into downloading a malicious version of its Bard AI software. Unlike the intended helpful chatbot, this fraudulent version is packed with malware.

The lawsuit, filed in California, claims that scammers based in Vietnam have been creating social media accounts and running ads to promote a version of Bard that fails to offer useful answers, such as cooking tips. Instead, once downloaded, this harmful software infiltrates users' systems to steal passwords and social media credentials, particularly using Facebook as their main distribution channel.

According to Google's official statement, the company issued over 300 takedown requests before resorting to litigation. The lawsuit aims to prevent the scammers from establishing similar fraudulent domains, especially through US-based domain registrars. Google asserts that this legal action will act as a deterrent and provide a clear framework to thwart future scams.

Additionally, the lawsuit emphasizes that emerging technologies are vulnerable to exploitation. In this case, scammers misrepresented Bard as a paid service requiring a download, when in fact, it is a free web service.
