Google Unlocks Access to Its AI-Powered Text-to-Music Tool

AI-generated music is gaining attention as recent developments, including a track featuring vocals similar to those of Drake and The Weeknd, have emerged. Additionally, Spotify has reportedly removed thousands of songs amid concerns that users were manipulating the platform. In this evolving landscape, Google is stepping in with its text-to-music AI, MusicLM.

Initially announced in January, Google had expressed concerns about offering public access to MusicLM due to ethical issues surrounding copyright material used in generated songs. However, the generative AI environment has changed significantly this year, prompting Google to invite the public to explore MusicLM. "We’ve collaborated with musicians like Dan Deacon and held workshops to explore how this technology can enhance creativity," shared Hema Manickavasagam and Kristin Yim from Google Research and Google Labs, respectively.

It’s important to note that the current version of MusicLM does not allow users to generate music featuring specific artists or their vocals. This limitation aims to mitigate copyright concerns and prevent the generation of unauthorized "unreleased songs" that could be sold for profit.

You can now sign up to experiment with MusicLM via AI Test Kitchen on the web as well as on Android and iOS. Google encourages users to input prompts based on mood, genre, or instruments, such as “soulful jazz for a dinner party” or "two nylon string guitars playing in flamenco style." The experimental AI will generate two tracks, allowing users to select their favorite by clicking a trophy icon, which contributes to improving the model.
