Google has introduced an experimental feature that transforms your research into an AI-generated podcast, complete with two virtual hosts discussing your findings. This feature is integrated into NotebookLM, the AI note-taking app launched by Google last year. The AI hosts summarize your material, draw connections between topics, and engage in lighthearted banter, enhancing the app's existing functionalities that help manage your notes, transcripts, and research documents.
Leveraging Google’s Gemini AI model, NotebookLM already excels at summarizing research, and this new feature offers an audio interpretation of that summary. During my experience with the Audio Overview, I entered a sample notebook on the invention of the lightbulb. The result was captivating. Over a 10-minute discussion, the hosts joyfully acknowledged that Thomas Edison wasn't the sole inventor and emphasized that “in the end, it’s actually a story about teamwork.”
The AI hosts exhibit human-like qualities in their conversation style, emphasizing certain phrases and using contemporary language. However, there were occasional quirks, such as spelling out words like “P-L-U-S” and referring to platinum as “bling bling metal.” While this makes the learning experience more engaging, it raises questions about the appropriateness of their tone when addressing serious topics such as cancer or war.
Additionally, the dialogue occasionally contains filler content, which might detract from the clarity of information. Google clarifies that this feature is “not a comprehensive or objective view of a topic but simply a reflection” of your notes.
There are limitations to the Audio Overview; generating the podcast-like discussions can take several minutes, and the feature is currently only available in English. Like many AI tools, it may not always provide accurate information.
To experiment with this feature, open a notebook in NotebookLM, navigate to the Notebook guide in the bottom-right corner, and select Load under “Audio Overview.” It's a fun way to explore a random topic and discover what the AI hosts can share.
