"Google's Gemini AI Launches on Android: What You Need to Know"

Google is launching Gemini, its new large language model, on Android, starting with the Pixel 8 Pro. This flagship smartphone will feature Gemini Nano, a streamlined version of the model optimized for local performance on smaller devices. Powered by the Google Tensor G3 chip, the Pixel 8 Pro enhances AI capabilities across various applications.

For instance, the phone's Recorder app will introduce a Summarize feature that no longer requires a network connection to summarize recorded conversations, interviews, and presentations. Additionally, Gemini's intelligence will enhance Gboard's Smart Reply feature, providing context-aware, high-quality response suggestions for messages. Currently available as a developer preview, this feature is limited to WhatsApp but will expand to more applications next year.

“Gemini Nano on the Pixel 8 Pro offers advantages such as enhanced privacy by keeping sensitive data on-device and enabling functionality without a network connection,” stated Brian Rakowski, Google's vice president of product management.

Alongside this AI launch, Google is updating Bard, its ChatGPT competitor, with Gemini technology, promising notable improvements in the Pixel Assistant's performance. The company is also rolling out various AI-powered productivity and customization enhancements for other Pixel devices, including the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Watch.

Gemini Nano represents the smallest version of Google's large language models, while Gemini Pro, a more extensive variant, will support Bard and additional Google services like Search, Ads, and Chrome. Later in 2024, Gemini Ultra, the most powerful model, will be introduced for advanced AI development.

Furthermore, Google discussed AI Core, a service within Android 14 that enables developers to leverage AI features like Gemini Nano. Designed to operate on new machine learning hardware, such as the latest Google Tensor TPU and flagship offerings from Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek, AI Core will see further announcements regarding additional device support in the months ahead.
