How Our New AI Feature Achieved 5% Adoption in Just One Week

Since the launch of ChatGPT, technology leaders have rushed to showcase their latest AI innovations. However, true business value lies not in simply adopting trendy technology, but in creating features that genuinely enhance user experience. By focusing on our users' core needs and developing AI capabilities that align with that vision, we were able to achieve a tenfold increase in engineering return on investment and validate adoption through meaningful metrics.

Our initial AI feature did not resonate with our users, leading to a disappointing 0.5% adoption rate among returning users within the first month. We quickly refocused our efforts on understanding our users' needs, which led us to adopt an "AI as agent" approach. Our product specializes in handling exceptionally large datasets—think billions of rows in a single spreadsheet. This presents a considerable challenge for traditional AI models that require entire datasets as inputs. However, our agent mimics human analyst behavior, such as examining metadata and computing aggregates, making it capable of extracting insights while maintaining data integrity.

Additionally, the AI as agent architecture enables us to prioritize user privacy. While some users may overlook data-sharing concerns, others have valid reservations about their privacy rights. Our AI agent operates separately from foundational data storage, ensuring user data remains secure and under the user's control, all while seamlessly executing their requests.

Finally, our approach enhances transparency. Many users struggle to trust AI outputs, often due to unforeseen "hallucinations" from earlier models. Our AI agent documents all actions taken based on user prompts, allowing users to verify processes and refine analyses as needed. This transparency fosters trust and empowers users to engage more effectively with our product.
