Microsoft has sparked significant privacy and security discussions with the upcoming launch of its controversial AI feature, Recall, integrated into Copilot+ PCs. In response, Microsoft has decided to make Recall opt-in rather than enabled by default. Now, a recent thread on X (formerly Twitter) reveals that Microsoft is enhancing user control over which applications can utilize AI.
This new feature will be conveniently located in the Settings Privacy & Security section under Let apps use Generative AI. Users can effortlessly toggle the feature on or off and specify which applications receive access to generative AI. This initiative aims to empower users with greater control over the applications and interfaces that leverage generative AI capabilities.
Additionally, users have the option to select specific applications permitted to use AI. This level of customization is particularly beneficial since it allows Windows users to manage which applications can employ generative AI when the global setting is activated. As generative AI becomes increasingly prevalent, having a centralized location to view and manage app permissions will be a welcome change.
This functionality is part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26236, available for Canary channel users. Alongside this setting enhancement, the update introduces several minor improvements, including bug fixes, a Microsoft Wallet-integrated store, and performance upgrades. Notable applications already employing AI features include Microsoft 365 Copilot and Bing Chat, which offer capabilities like Intelligent Recap, Live Translations, and Personalized Insights. Importantly, these AI features will only be activated upon user permission.
